Mary Sibande is known for her unique art showing domestic workers in various situations. This African art piece is part of her collection entitled ‘The purple shall govern’, and aims to subvert the traditional views of domestic workers in South Africa, in particular the ‘maid’ stereotype. This piece was inspired by an incident in 1989 when anti-apartheid protestors were sprayed with purple dye for easy identification later. This image shows Sibande’s female figure, known as Sophie, being admired and venerated at her emancipation from the usual altered maid’s outfit she wears in much of Sibande’s work. Upvote the art that sets your soul on fire.
