Mohau Modisakeng is a Sowetan born artist. His African art explores themes such as violence, labour and mourning in apartheid South Africa. Modisakeng is highly interested in South African history, in particular, its recurring presence of violence and exclusion in the material culture of the everyday. This image depicts a man holding a gun while a white pigeon hangs in mid-flight behind him. In this collection, Modisakeng touches on issues including institutionalised and systemic racism, militarisation, and civil unrest of apartheid in South Africa, by using the black African body as a site of fragmentation, distortion and degradation.
