This piece by Chris Saunders is from his collaboration with performance artist Manthe Ribane and musician Okzhap. The film itself connects traditional Zulu and Japanese mythologies via elements of the story, and by combining these Saunders is showing that the Zulu cultural beliefs are translatable worldwide. The film follows a young girl who finds herself in an African metropolis, where she must find a purpose for an object she is given upon arrival. By collaborating with these African artists, Saunders’ African art examines the emotional landscape of the new international conversations taking place in the modern, hyper-connected African city.
