This piece is by popular Kenyan photographer Osborne Macharia. It is from his ‘Macicio’ Africa art series, which is based on a group of rebel fighters in Kenya who lead a revolt against the British in the 1950s. Macharia creates fictional images and fantastical situations which explore and juxtapose Kenya’s history and past. This image features the character of General Njuguna, the commander-in-chief of the freedom fighter MauMaus, who has been a freedom fighter since the age of nine. According to Macharia, the stars on his vest represent the different lives he has saved.
