Athi-Patra Ruga is a South African-born artist whose work is taking the African art world by storm. His piece entitled ‘The Night of the Long Knives IV’ does not depict what one expects (a bloody rendition of the World War Two event) but rather features an idyllic scenario. It shows a wide range of unique flora and fauna, featuring his oft-seen infamous ballooned character titled ‘The White Woman of Azania’, riding sidesaddle on a zebra through a tropical idyll. She is the metaphorical representation of the Rainbow Nation, a dream which Ruga believes has not been achieved.
