Mary Sibande is a South African artist whose work is known for its satirical messages about post-apartheid South Africa. Her work focuses on ‘Sophie’, Sibande’s alter-ego and a mannequin that has been based on Sibande’s own face. Many of her Africa art pieces tell the story of Sophie and her dreams of freedom from life as a domestic worker. Sibande has dressed Sophie in an elaborate, Victorian version of the traditional ‘maid’s outfit’ and has elevated her out of the situation, particularly with this image. Sibande is showing Sophie as being closer to her goal of emancipation on a rearing horse, at once heroic and imposing.
